FRIENDS, family and mountaineering colleagues of Ger McDonnell who died earlier this year have erected a plaque in memory of the hero at the top of Carrauntoohill.Ger became the first Irishman to reach the summit of K2 on August 1, 2008 but lost his life with ten other climbers the next day when they were hit by falling ice. Mr McDonnell's partner, Annie Starkey along with members of the McDonnell family attended the special commemoration on St Stephen's Day. Ger traditionally climbed to top of Carrauntoohill each year on December 26.
